Mac vs. PC

I am all for people using what they want and like but can't stand these ads which make absurd claims. Here are some statistics related to security flaws that you may find interesting. Again, use what you want but don't make lame excuses just because you like one GUI over another.

Windows XP, Vista, and Mac OS X vulnerability stats for 2007

XP Vista XP + Vista Mac OS X
Total extremely critical 3 1 4 0
Total highly critical 19 12 23 234
Total moderately critical 2 1 3 2
Total less critical 3 1 4 7
Total flaws 34 20 44 243
Average flaws per month 2.83 1.67 3.67 20.25

The table was take from this link where you can also get links to the actual CVE numbers of the flaws. Enjoy!

This was a hot topic on the University of Tennessee's LANMAN listserv yesterday. Consider the following:

"I just wanted to share the following information:

When I search the CVE repository on the National Vulnerability Database for CVEs on Microsoft Vista issued in 2007, I get 167 results, not the 20 quoted in the blog..

And when I search the CVE repository on the National Vulnerability Database for CVEs on Apple OS X issued in 2007, I get 156 results, not the 243 quoted in the blog..

How very odd...

FYI, The National Vulnerability Database, http://nvd.nist.gov, is the source referenced by MITRE, http://cve.mitre.org, which is the source referenced by Secunia, http://www.secunia.com, which was used as the source for the blog info."

Great research but it still proves the point that people use what they prefer. Gone are the days of the Mac being invulnerable to penetration and attack. With great popularity comes great vulnerability, especially if you try to "dumb down" your interface for people who don't understand what is happening behind the scenes.
